Winona State University’s Career Services hosted its bi-annual Etiquette Dinner for students Nov. 4 at WSU’s East Hall in Winona, Minn.
“Elements of formal dining have gone to the wayside,” said Vicki Decker, Career Services director.
Decker said the students consistently give great feedback after attending. Maureen Cooney, event consultant, taught WSU students formal dining etiquette and business self-marketing skills. Amber Shoutz and Sydney Hansan, WSU freshmen, said they attended the dinner to gain important professional skills.
Students were given tips concerning dress, dining etiquette, how to introduce oneself, how to properly exchange business cards and other skills. When attending a business function or interview, Cooney suggests, “Always dress yourself for the job you wish to hold.”
Cooney also suggested offering a warm hand when introducing yourself. Unfortunately, to prevent the spread of the H1N1 virus, handshakes were avoided throughout the evening.
When in doubt as to which silverware to use in a formal setting, Cooney says to start with silverware on the outside and work your way in.
Co-sponsors of the event included Target Stores and Merchants Bank.
JC Penny provided examples of appropriate business attire for young professionals.

Winona State University is number 11 of the top 25 safest campuses in the United States, according to research by “The Daily Beast,” a news reporting and opinion Web site.
“Compared to a lot of the things I hear about other schools, I feel safe,” said WSU sophomore Laura Rusnacko. “Winona seems like a tight-knit community.”
Rusnacko said she was surprised to hear WSU was ranked number 11 of more than 4,000 other schools nationwide, but was happy with the results.
According to Don Walski, WSU’s director of security, the “safest campus” ranking can be attributed to the quality of WSU students, the level of support from WSU’s departments and administration, and a professional and responsive security staff.
WSU senior Caitlin Wieser said she feels safe and is glad of WSU’s ranking.
Wieser said she never has had an issue on campus that threatened her safety.
The WSU security includes two other full-time employees and 65 student employees in addition to Walski.
Rusnacko said, “At night I see security guards walking around campus when I brush my teeth which makes me feel safe.”
